Why the Mike on the stage of 2007 Music Award is shorter than the people’s tall?

Watching 2007 American Music Award, I noticed that the front Mic on stage stands pretty short so that everybody had to bend over a bit to reach the mic to speak. Is it a gesture of respect to the audience? or it was easily neglected amid all that hustle and bustle of stage preparation which I doubt that it could be so for such a historical occasion!
