Once leukemia has spread to the brain does that make it terminal?

My cousin's son was diagnosed with AML back in November. He did not respond to chemo so they did a bone marrow transplant. However, right before he had the transplant we were told that the leukemia had spread to his spine and brain. Is this the end of the road so to speak? Or does he have hope with the bone marrow transplant?
